Language Overview: Urdu is a language of Pakistan. Urdu has a classification of Indo-European, Indo-Iranian, Indo-Aryan, Central zone, Western Hindi, and Hindustani.

Regions Spoken: Urdu is also spoken in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Botswana, Fiji, Germany, Guyana, India, Malawi, Mauritius, Nepal, Norway, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and Zambia.

Population: The population of Urdu speakers in Pakistan is about 10,719,000, as of 1993. The total population of all Urdu speakers is about 60,503,579 (which means that about 49,784,579 Urdu speakers live in other countries).

Dialects: Urdu is similar to Hindi but has more formal vocabulary, which is borrowed from Arabic and Persian. Dakhini is freer of Perisna and Arabic loans than Urdu is. Rekhta is a type of Urdu that is used in writing poetry.

Brief History: Urdu is an official language and has about 104,000,000 people who speak it as their second language. Urdu was used in the bible from 1843-1998. Also most Urdu speakers are of the Muslim faith.
